St John Chaotic Kayak - July 27, 2014

The island community of St. John will be out again in force this year to support

Team River Runner Wounded Veterans Program (TRR)

. In 2013 a total of 32 teams took part in the 3rd annual

St. John Chaotic Kayak race

on Oppenheimer Beach and where they raised over $30,000. 100% of the proceeds will be used to bring wounded veterans and their spouses down island every November for one week of healing in the beautiful waters of St. John.

If you are a St. John business owner or an employee wanting to have your business represented with a kayak team, please join the events on their

Facebook

page and sign up by posting on the wall with your intent to compete. Entry is $150.00 for a 3 person team, 2 paddlers and one water gunner. Each business will be provided with their own online donation page that will posted on the Chaotic Kayak website. Each team will be awarded an additional 5 second head start for every $100 they raise!

This year's event will also include a Stand Up Paddle Board race! Bring your own board and entry fee is only $25 per board. If you are a stand up paddle boarder, please help spread the word about this epic event!

Team River Runner (TRR) was founded at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in 2004 by Washington, D.C. area kayak enthusiast Joe Mornini who has been hosting trips for TRR members to St. John since 2007. While the group was forced to cancel its 2008 trip due to lack of funds, that will never be the case again with the continual support of the St John community.

Please join everyone for our 4th Annual St. John Chaotic Kayak on Sunday, July 27, 2014. There will be live music, beer tents, food, kayak races, SUP races, raffle prizes and more! This is a fabulous day on the water doing what St Johnians do best - giving back to others!

USVI Carnival 2014

Carnival is alive with brilliant colors & music

St John's Carnival season begins early next month and culminates with an all night party (J'ouvert) and a wonderful parade through Cruz Bay on July 4th complete with moko jumbees, and fireworks over the harbor.  The entire month is filled with music, food, activities such as bike and boat rides, Children and Adult parades, and, did we mention food?

And, of course, great local food:

So, what is not to like?

Great Expectations has had a cancellation (a rare occurrence for us!) for Carnival this coming 4th of July week from Sunday, June 29 - Monday, July 7.  What better way to celebrate the 4th of July than right here in our pool (after a hard day at the beach or watching the parade)?

April & May St John news flashes & fun St John clips:

  • CNN reported that St John made the Condé Nast Traveler list of 'Top 10 Islands in the Caribbean & Atlantic'. Their readers found: the "natural beauty" of St. John to be unparalleled. Most of the island is a preserved national park, allowing visitors to enjoy the "emerald green beaches" and exotic "native fauna and flora." Bounce around the numerous cays in a kayak, or snorkel at Trunk Bay, where you might end up swimming "with a hawksbill turtle."

  • AirfareWatchDog just announced great airfares to St Thomas (STT) this spring and fall! Fly on American or US Air starting June 4th and on on either Delta or United for travel between September 2 and December 11 and get super deals. Many US cities (Boston, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Washington, Charlotte, Cleveland) included. Hopefully, as usual, Jet Blue will drop their fares to match!

  • On Saturday, May 24th get your bathing suit on and head to Maho beach for the Saturday for the 11th annual Beach-to-Beach Power Swim in support of the Friends of Virgin Islands National Park fundraising supporting their 'learn to swim' program among several other great initiatives. Even if you are not a swimmer you can help by volunteering on land or sea (in a kayak)...or from afar by donating on-line.

  • Woody's Seafood has become quite a fixture on St John and this month is celebrating its 25th anniversary and, more importantly (we feel) their 20th year of hosting its Block Party which has raised over $20,000 for the St John Cancer Fund.

  • St John Historical Society (SJHS) celebrates 40 years of support and encourages the preservation and protection of objects, structures, traditions, and features of historic, cultural, or archeological value to the island of St. John. Their mission is to increase the knowledge, awareness and understanding of St. John’s history and cultural heritage by such means as lectures, seminars, field trips, hikes, consultations, special educational programs and events. Just this month they have uncovered and been restoring the historic 'Cruz Bay Free-Colored Cemetery'.

  • April was the month of family gatherings at Great Expectations small and large. We were delighted to host - for the 4th time - Frank from MA who came with his cousin as well as to welcome for the first time Gretchen's family of 8 adults and 8 children who told us 'the house was perfect. The views, the pools and the layout made an ideal getaway for our families. Hoping to return soon.' It sure makes our day when we meet and exceed our guests expectations!

St John Film Presents: One Lucky Elephant

St. John Film presents a very special film about man and his best friend, you won't want to miss!

TUESDAY, May 6, 2014

St John School of the Arts

Cruz Bay - 7:30 pm

ONE LUCKY ELEPHANT

Lisa Leeman, Director and Co-Writer

Ten years in the making,

ONE LUCKY ELEPHANT

follows the poignant journey of circus producer David Balding as he tries to find a nurturing and permanent home for Flora, the 18-year-old African elephant that he rescued as an infant, raised as his “daughter” and made the star of his circus. David’s love for Flora is put to the ultimate test when he realizes he made a terrible mistake keeping her as a solo elephant, and decides to retire her from the circus after 17 years of performing.

Knowing Flora will outlive him, and with his health and finances becoming an issue, David sets off on a quest to find a home for Flora can live freely with other elephants. This complicated task begins with Flora’s final circus performance in St. Louis and takes us on an emotional trek across America, then to Africa and back.

We follow David’s journey as he discovers just how difficult it is to find a proper home for an elephant in a world that reveres these animals for their majesty yet slaughters them for their ivory, adores them as cuddly Dumbos yet brands them “rampaging creatures”.

ONE LUCKY ELEPHANT

raises critical issues about the well-being and future of the hundreds of thousands of endangered and exotic animals kept in captivity, the over development and destruction of their natural habitats, our intense and often damaging relationship with wild animals, and how all these issues have impacted the life of one very lucky elephant.

Come early to help set up the chairs! Thanks in advance!

neat video

The waters of St John never cease to amaze. Recently, there have been more dolphin and whale sightings than in recent years, some beautifully captured by both the professional photographers of St John and the lucky boater who happened to be in the right location.

March & April St John news flashes & fun St John clips:

  • Fast & Furious was this year's headline for the 41st St Thomas International Regatta (previously known as the St Thomas Rolex Regatta). Held March 28 - March 31, the weather was blustery and waters rough with sustained 20+ knot winds making the 3 day regatta one of the most exciting in years. Pillsbury Sound was alive with color as 69 boats from all over the world and well represented by the Virgin Islands which held its own in many of the classes (unofficial results).

  • March 29th marked the 45th anniversary of Project Tektite I, the unusual underwater activities of UVI’s Virgin Islands Environmental Resources Station(VIERS) located in Lameshur Bay on the East End of St John. This project established an ambitious underwater habitat research project for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) in the spring of 1969 on St. John. The celebration featured a short historic film about Tektite I and a panel of original Tektite aquanauts, who used the underwater habitat to study living conditions similar to what future NASA astronauts would encounter in space.

  • The US Virgin Islands and St John, in particular, made the Destination Wedding Magazine's '10 Caribbean Islands Perfect for Weddings' list and that comes as no surprise to us since many of our guests have been brides & grooms. Whether you want a beach wedding or small wedding right at the villa, each and every one is special. This past month we congratulate our recent guests, Allison and Trevor, who were married while staying at Great Expectations.

  • Great Expectations is now partnering with another wonderful charter operator. If you are interested in getting out on the waters around St John you can now sail on the popular Calypso, a 40' sailing catamaran able to accommodate up to 32 people or if power boating is more your style think about Bad Kitty, a 49' wave piercing power catamaran which is able to cover lots of distance in one day. Guests of Great Expectations will be offered a 20% discount; you must confirm, at the time of booking your reservation that you are a registered guest. They also have dinghy rentals for which our guests receive a 15% discount. All boats can be privately chartered, in you wish.

  • We were delighted to hear about the opening of De' Coal Pot, the new Cruz Bay restaurant featuring local Caribbean food. Serving truly authentic (and we hear, delicious) roti, curried goat, garlic herb conch, as well as Caribbean lobster, this new restaurant is sure to be a hit. Check out their menu and stop by on your next visit to St John. If you like West Indian food another great choice is to give Etta's Place a try. Etta's, open only for lunch, is located on the second floor at the Marketplace and serves up a great takeout meal. While Etta's does not have a website or Facebook page, she serves up some pretty fantastic goat, conch, and mutton. Her menu changes daily so best to call (340) 693-0090 ahead to ensure she has your favorite items.

  • CNN has placed St John's Trunk Bay in the #1 position on their list of 'Beach Photos that'll make you drool' list. If you have been to St John, you have most likely stopped at the overlook of Trunk Bay to take a picture. It is said that Trunk is one of the 10 most photographed beach in the world (how they know that, we know not!).

  • Next time you go past Mongoose Junction be sure to stop in at Mongoose's newest, and soon to be most popular shops -- St John Scoops which is serving up to 16 flavors of home-made ice cream. The flavors are fun for kids of all ages since there is an 'adult' variety including champagne sorbet and burgundy wine sorbet. It would not be St John without a rum version so they are also planning to offer 'real rum raisin' and 'painkiller'. For those traditionalists amongst the crowd, do not worry they promise to have some of better known favorites such as cookies & cream, pistachio, and chocolate peanut butter cup.

St John Film - and Filmmaker - Presents Original Film Yurumein: Homeland

St John Film Society

presents and original film tonight! TUESDAY, April 1, 2014

St John School of the Arts

Cruz Bay - 7:30 pm

Yurumein: Homeland

 2014 Documentary / 50-minutes

What happens when a dislocated people begin to reckon with a past laden with trauma and repression?  YURUMEIN follows this journey as members of the Black Carib / Garifuna Diaspora attempt to rekindle a disappeared culture and revitalize its language, dance and music. The film reveals signs of resilience as local Vincentians (some with Carib ancestry, some without) come together to honor their ancestors and celebrate their Garifuna past, and in doing so, begin the journey of healing, rebuilding, and preserving the homeland.  YURUMEIN is a post-colonial story of re-identification and cultural retrieval among the indigenous Caribs in the Caribbean.

Andrea Leland

is an independent filmmaker and artist who calls St John home. She has produced and directed award winning documentaries focusing on Caribbean and Latin American cultures. In Haiti, Belize, Chiapas, and several Caribbean islands, she works collaboratively with community members providing a forum to voice their untold stories, personal challenges and compelling triumphs. Social, artistic or political actions are placed within context of their culture, imploring the viewer to confront old myths and discover a new perspective. These documentaries are successful tools for cultural preservation.

The April 1st screening will also include two short films directed by St John residents:

Best $25 Million Spent By US Government -- Happy 97st 'Birthday' to the US Virgin Islands

Today - March 31st - marks the 97th anniversary of the day the Danish government transferred the Virgin Islands to the United States officially making them the UNITED STATES Virgin Islands (USVI).  Around the USVI, each year the day which is officially referred to as Transfer Day, is marked by celebrations and lectures.

Looking back at the $25 million it cost to 'buy' the Virgin Islands it sure seems like a pretty good investment!

Here is an idea for next year's Transfer Day: come to St John yourself to celebrate your islands!

St Thomas International Regatta Has Full Slate of Boats

The St. Thomas International Regatta kicks off Wednesday with five days of events including world-class racing. It’s the 41st year for the regatta but the first with a change in name and sponsorship.

According to the

St John Source

, after 40 years as the primary sponsor for the event, watchmaker Rolex has reduced its involvement. But regatta organizers say the show will go on, with the V.I. Department of Tourism stepping in as primary sponsor.

“Rolex has been a wonderful partner for 40 years allowing us to put on excellent regattas," director Bill Canfield told the international racing website www.regatta.com. “Rolex will remain heavily involved with the 2014 regatta but we are in a transition period. It is our promise the event will continue to offer fantastic racing and shore side activities from 2015 onward.”

Rolex's most recent three-year sponsorship contract expires this year. Over the years the luxury watchmaker's involvement in the world of sailing has grown, including sponsorship of the Rolex Yachtsmen and Rolex Yachtswomen of the year awards and huge, high profile events such as the Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race in Australia.

Organizers of the St. Thomas International Regatta announced in December that the Department of Tourism would step up its longtime sponsorship support.

“We feel it’s important to both the sailing and marine industries for this regatta to continue, so we decided to increase our support,” said Tourism Commissioner Beverly Nicholson-Doty. “The regatta shines a global spotlight on the U.S. Virgin Islands and, at the same time, welcomes hundreds of visitors to the territory.”

More than 1,000 sailors, families and friends attend the St. Thomas regatta annually, according to Tourism. Economic impact data shows attendees spend an average of $250 per day per person in hotels, rental cars, taxis, restaurants, shops, provisions and other expenditures. This adds up to a total of over $1.1 million dollars to the territory’s treasury from this three-day sailing event.

The regatta will be accompanied by the first STIR Golf Tournament, which tees off at 10 a.m. Wednesday. The entry fee is $97 for V.I. residents with their own clubs and $135 for visitors who need clubs. Prizes for the first, second and third place teams will be awarded at the regatta awards ceremony March 30.

After the golf, visitors and residents can quench their thirsts beginning at 5 p.m. at the St. Thomas Yacht Club. The Red Hook Pub Crawl is scheduled to follow from 9 p.m. to midnight. Shuttle service from the STYC starts at 9 p.m.

Sailors and landlubbers alike are invited to the Regatta Welcome Party at the STYC on Thursday. The Ah We Band plays from 7 to 10 p.m. Dinner will available for purchase.

The action shifts to the seas Friday when a fleet of more than 70 yachts from the Caribbean, U.S., Europe, Russia and Australia set sail starting at 11 a.m. for Charlotte Amalie harbor and race day.

Fans can watch from the waterfront as the fleet sails into the harbor and then starts on a second race back to the island’s east end. Back on shore, the Jump-Up Party will take place from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. at the yacht club. The Becca Darling Band will play from 3 to 6 p.m., with Cool Sessions brass taking over from 7 to 11 p.m.

Racing continues March 29. In the afternoon, there will be music by Sol from 2:30 to 5:30 p.m. at STYC. Then a new STIR tradition will be launched – with the Captain Morgan Yacht Haven Grande Party from 6:30 to 11 p.m. featuring Spectrum Band on stage and dining and drinking at nearby restaurants and bars.

Sailors launch off the final day of competition March 30 to determine who takes their places on the podium. Music by Full Circle will greet the fleet from 2:30 to 5:30 p.m.

The St. Thomas International Regatta is sponsored by Captain Morgan and Heineken, distributed by Bellows International, Little Switzerland, and the U.S. Virgin Islands Department of Tourism.

MARCH 28 UPDATE:  Big winds make for a great start for the Regatta. Details courtesy of the Sailing Scutterbut with a fabulous video.

St John's Coral Bay will be filled with fun, sailing, music, and art this weekend - all for great causes

Tomorrow - Saturday, March 22 the Coral Bay Yacht Club is hosting the 18th Flotilla Party to benefit Guy Benjamin School. Many good hearted sailors donate their time and their boats for this fun and important cause.

Attendees can sail to the beach party aboard a volunteer sailboat in the morning, for $40 per person, which includes admission. Admission for those who drive there is $20 per person ($40 per person for those who wish to participate in the water flotilla & party).

For those not interested in partaking in the water flotilla you can just head out to Hansen's Bay Beach, in Round Bay, on the East End of St John. From noon to 4 PM you can feast on West Indian dishes, hamburgers, hot dogs and salads.

All proceeds are used to enhance the education for students at Guy Benjamin School. Larger tax deductible donations may be made by check to the Coral Bay Community Council indicating “Flotilla” in the memo line. Join Coral Bay on March 22nd at this fun Flotilla Beach Party!

St John Tradewinds reports

that there will be...a day of food, fun and information is planned for Saturday, March 22, at the Department of Agriculture Station in Coral Bay.

The American Legion Viggo E. Sewer Post #131 is hosting Mama Juama from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., an arts and craft fair and fundriaser at the group’s headquarters just down the road from Love City Mini Mart in Coral Bay.

Named in honor of a traditional rum and herb concoction made for hundreds of years, the American Legion’s Mama Juama will a family fun day featuring food cooked up by members of the American Legion Auxiliary, drinks, a plant sale, local artists and craftspeople as well as information for veterans.

“We want to get the word out that we are here,” said the American Legion Post #131 Commander Doug Benton. “A lot of veterans don’t know we even exist. We want veterans to know what their benefits are.”

St John Makes the Destination Weddings List for 'Best Caribbean Islands for Perfect Wedding'

Destination Weddings Magazine

names the Virgin Islands one of the 10 Best Caribbean Islands for a Perfect Wedding'.

What Makes it Unique The USVI is a triple threat: three isles, three styles, all accessible without cracking open your passport.

St. John

is accessible only by ferry from St. Thomas and is two-thirds national park, with winding trails leading through marine forests populated with wild burros and dazzling lookouts (some topped by stone ruins) over quiet beaches. Hold your reception in funky Cruz Bay, the isle's walkable main town lined with eclectic waterfront eateries and bars. They say that the Virgin Islands also makes the list because of its beautiful vistas at every turn, its relaxing and casual environment, and last but not least its sensual delights! We quite agree!

Whether you are interested in a formal wedding or a beach setting there are wonderful options for each and every couple. This couple chose a villa wedding with a catered reception and we were honored to host them at Great Expectations.

This Year Everyone Can Join in and celebrate the St John (USVI) St Patrick's Day Parade Whether You are on Island or Far Away Thanks to Live Streaming

This year our St Patrick's Day parade will be live-streamed thanks to St John Now.  St John's parade might be short, maybe the shortest of any parade anywhere -- at one whole block long -- but, it is sure to be one of the most fun parades if history has any relevance!

Take a look at the News of St John Posting to see the entire route (truly, one block!) and tune in tomorrow, March 15, around 11 AM EST (remember, things on St John happen on island time so it could be a tad later! There will be lots of green, lots of libations (of all colors), music, moko jumbees, and even pooches from the St John Animal Care Center.

The Virgin Islands National Park Has Organized a New Hike - L'Esperance Hike Ending at Reef Bay
